Love Your Neighbor

The sign in my yard

It’s not political, but it is
It’s definitely controversial
Some say it’s liberal - maybe

It’s the second greatest commandment and it’s just like the first.
Really? Yes.

“‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets” (Matt. 22:37-40).

But
The people on that list
Yes
The people
Don’t you know what they are …
Yes, people loved by God

Sinners!
Sure, we all are.
None of us have lives perfectly aligned to God's will.

“It was said, ‘You shall love your neighbour and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be children of your Father in heaven” (Matt. 5:43-45).

So?
Even if you think of them as enemies
You are to love them

Politcal?
Yes
The way of Jesus offers an alternative vision for the world

Radical?
Most definitely
The way of Jesus does not conform to the patterns of the world

A call to love God and love our neighbour is the most fundamental aspect of being a Christian.
