Blogging Again

For several weeks I’ve had the words of Bruce Cockburn’s song, All the Diamonds in the World, running as a constant soundtrack in my head. Not all the words are on repeat, but what I’m hearing constantly is,

I ran aground in a harbour town
Lost the taste for being free
Thank God He sent some gull-chased ship
To carry me to sea

These words have been close to my heart since I first heard Cockburn sing them at Greenbelt in 1987.

During this time of staying at home I’ve been reflecting on my life and what I want to contribute to the world or at least to my circle of influence. I am acutely aware that I have run aground and lost the taste for being free. It is time to board the ship and allow it to once again carry me to sea. Where it will take me only God knows, but I’m getting on board to see where it goes.

Every journey begins with the first step, it can begin no other way, and the first step is often the most difficult step to take. My first step is a return to blogging. In January 2005 I started a blog that ran until August of 2012 when I shut it down because I “lost the taste for being free.” It just became easier to shut down than to deal with all the negativity that inevitably comes with a public blog.

However, I am not, nor have I ever been, someone who is shy about expressing his informed opinion. While the writing on this blog will not be as full and detailed as a book would be, it will be significantly longer and more nuanced than the shouting matches that erupt on platforms like Twitter and Facebook.

So, let’s see how this journey goes!
